This is the first part of a project build series in which I design and construct a Grand Banks style dory from scratch. In this first episode we begin the process of designing and lofting the boat at scale. Boat designs are recorded with a type of drawing we call a “lines drawing”. It consists of four different views: Profile view; half breadth view; body plan view; and diagonals. I explain the basic steps in “laying down the lines”, and we wrap the video up with the profile view complete. In the next video we will move onto the half breadth view and body plan.
